Swiss railways: Rhätische Bahn (2011)
The Rhaetian Railway (RhB) covers the southeastern canton of Graubünden. We traveled on RhB from Disentis to St. Moritz, including a nice lunch on the railway's Gourmino restaurant car on the scenic Albula line from Reichenau to St. Moritz. The next day, we boarded a Swiss Postal bus at St. Moritz to travel through Bernina Pass to reach the town of Poschiavo, which is the operational center of the RhB line to Tirano, Italy (RhB's only station outside Switzerland). Poschiavo was a rail enthusiast's delight, with an impressive, modern rotary snowplow, a dual-power (electric and diesel) locomotive (no. 802), and two ancient electrics, boxcab 151 (built 1909) and steeplecab 162 (1911). I made a round trip to Tirano (including a ride over the spiral viaduct at Brusio, draped in red due to restoration work), and then rejoined our group to return to St. Moritz on a Bernina Express train. The next day, we left St. Moritz for a rainy trip over the Albula line (including Landwasser Viaduct).
