Stone Crosses in Devon and Cornwall
Stone crosses beside the road or in church yards; called either a wayside cross, village cross, churchyard cross or moorland cross. Many are medieval in date but were broken or defaced during the Reformation and Civil war. Although they may have been widespread, a particularly large number of the surviving crosses are to be found in West Devon and Cornwall. There are fewer in Eastern and Northern Devon but even here the numbers are greater than in other English Counties
