Milford Tunnel Approach

Cars waiting at the entrance to the Milford Tunnel, Milford Road, Firodland, NZ

Rainfall is up to 7m a year in this part of the country. Vegetation clings to the steepest rocks, and seems to get a hold more or less everywhere - even on under-hanging terrain. The tunnel is situated on the final leg of the drive, about 10 mins from Milford Sound itself. Any once-in-a-lifetime visit to the South Island is incomplete without a visit here. Everyday, coaches by the dozen take the trip from Queenstown through to Milford Sound, with most visitors staying for the day and returning in the afternoon. For a much more intimate encounter, I would strongly suggest a kayak trip and an overnight stay at the nearby hostel.
