Vigil against G8/G20 police sexual violence in Toronto
Outside the police station in London, Ontario

--

[Here is a write-up about our local G20 fightback campaigning in July, and in late June]

The event call-out said this -

VIGIL TO DENOUNCE POLICE SEXUAL VIOLENCE
IN FRONT OF THE POLICE STATION
BECAUSE WE'RE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT

Sisters and brothers,
Something terrible has happened in our community. We already know how many women suffer sexual and physical violence at the hands of men every day in our city, in our country, in the world. But last week, during the brutal show of police force in what we once knew as toronto, women...peaceful women, were victims of sexual violence by our very own police officers. The men and women we count on to keep our streets safe. independent journalist Amy Miller recounts, www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcXhEd_mDt4

This is a dark and sad day in our history and one that should never be repeated. You know this is not the only incident when 1300 (unprescedented!) people were arrested. Many human rights were violated last weekend, but this is one clear issue where we can take a conscious stand.

This is a call to bear peace in the face of ignorance, fear and violence. Please join us to stand arm and arm with the men who stand with us to create a circle in front of the police station, lit by candles.
WEDNESDAY JULY 9, 8PM TO DARK INFRONT OF THE POLICE STATION

We will sing songs of love and freedom (please bring guitars, music, other instruments and candles) while we show the scenes of police brutality and AMY MILLER'S statement projected on the wall of the police station. And we will ask for accountability, dialogue and understanding. We will not fight intolerance and fear with intolerance and fear. We will respond with a demand for accountability and freedom of speech while we dance on their stupid borders, rules, policies and so called power.

This can never happen again. Sisters and brothers, we must unite. For everyone who decides to come, please reach out to someone who might otherwise not come. offer a ride, a bus ticket, encouragement, love...man or woman. we need to stand together.
PEACE AND SOLIDARITY MUST TAKE BACK THE STREETS IN A WILD DANCE OF FREEDOM"

The police were invited to come out to join us. They didn't do so.

Here's one of two videos from the vigil -

Together, we tackled the issues from different angles. There were statements about police conduct in general (beyond Summits), and about gender inequality in general... and some other important connections were made as well. I was focusing on Summits for the G20, the IMF, and so on. Others focused on the 2010 G20 Summit in Toronto.

After this rally, some of us condemned sexual violence from police in a statement about the police regime at the G20 Summit -
