Jubilee Beacon Lighting on Otley Chevin (June 4th, 2012)
This beacon, lit on Otley Chevin, was one of more than 30 across West Yorkshire to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and among more than 4,000 around the world that were lit up in sequence.
The Chevin fire was lit at Surprise View, the ridge overlooking Otley and Wharfedale at a height of over 900ft. Originally used for communication as a sort of medieval warning network (mainly dating to threat of invasion from the Spanish Armada), these ancient beacon chains have now come to be used for celebrations. They were lit for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897 and Queen Elizabeth II's Silver and Golden Jubilees in 1977 and 2002.
