Day One: Welcome to The World
On my latest walk up to the top of the valley above Otley, I came across the next generation of sheep in Sinclair's Field. There were some newborn spring lambs that appeared to be just a couple of hours old - the farmer hadn't found them yet and they were still trailing their umbilical cords.
At this tender age, they don't seem to have any fear of strangers - the young ones just stood there blinking in the sunlight and contemplating me with a neutral expression as I approached. They look so fragile and somehow unformed before their woolen coats have properly grown - indeed, some of the earliest births of the year get adorned with little plastic coats to help ward off the cold.
