thank you. duckduck - so far I'm just practicing the stitches. it surprised me just how elastic the smocked fabric is.

yes - it is suprising, isn't it? My great-grandmother was - a seamstress, I suppose you'd call her and a very talented one. I have two smocked dresses she made for me as a baby (she must have been at least eighty when she made them) and they are stlll perfect, My daughter wore them too. The workmanship is amazing. Yours has that evenness too.

the old dresses sound wonderful. what are they like?

the bodice was completely smocked and fitted well - but, as you say, very stretchy, and below the dress flared right out, as it would from gathers. Little puff sleeves, too. I'll see if I can find the dress to take a picture of. or a picture of Beth in it, stored on a cd somewhere...
      Very beautiful dresses.

thank you. I'd love to see them if you find a photo. I haven't seen much smocking so far, not even sure if there's a Czech word for it!
