The Hiker - looking N at Seabee Memorial - Arlington National Cemetery - 2011
Rear view of "The Hiker," the Spanish War Veterans Memorial on Memorial Drive at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, in the United States. The memorial refers to both the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. Memorial Drive is in front of the statue. Across the roadway is the Seabee Memorial.
The statue is of a soldier dressed in the uniform worn by the U.S. Army during the war. Inscribed into the granite base are the name of the memorial ("The Hiker"), the dates of the conflict, and a bronze plaque in the form of a cross listing the various theaters of the war.
Sculptor Theodora Alice Ruggles Kitson created the statue, which was first unveiled in Minnesota in May 1906. At least 50 replicas of her work were created. The Spanish War Veterans Memorial is one of these replicas. The memorial was dedicated on July 24, 1965.
