Phantom Orchid

One of the rarest plants around these parts, the Phantom orchid is said to flower only once every 17 years, so to see it is quite something! It is listed as Nationally Threatened by Cosewic in Canada and is Red listed in BC. It occurs on extreme southern Vancouver Island, the Southern Gulf Islands and in Chilliwack, then south to California and Idaho. I only wish I had brought my tripod that day. This is as sharp as I could manage without it! Note the lack of green. Pure saprophyte! Dragged this shot out of the archives for the new wildflowers of Vancouver Island group. Now I carry my tripod everywhere!
