2017 - Yokohama - Chinatown - Ma Zhu Miao Temple - 1 of 3
Yokohama's Chinatown has two temples. this is Masobyo (Ma Zhu Miao Temple).
Kwan Tai Temple is located on the corner of Kwan Tai Street and Chuzan Ro, close to the centre of Yokohama Chinatown. The temple enshrines the deity Kwan Tai who was a General in the Chinese Imperial Army around 200AD.
Mazu Miao, 横滨妈祖庙, is the newest of two Chinese Temples in Yokohama Chinatown, 横滨中华街. Mazu temple came into being when a plot of land in Chinatown was being prepared for construction of an apartment block. As part of the "Citizen-based town planning", a dialogue was initiated between the developers and local stakeholders.
The Chinatown community was concerned about the apartment project, as it would have a negative impact on their physical and cultural landscape. Sounds like what is happening in Vancouver Chinatown today.
The community appealed, negotiated with the developers and eventually bought the land from them for 990 million yen. This amount was raised through contributions from all over Japan.
After the acquisition; plans were made for a Mazu Temple to be built in its place.
After a few years of hard work, the Yokohama Mazu Miao, 横滨妈祖, was officially opened 17 March 2006.
