2017 - Mexico - Guadalajara - Rotonda de los Hombres Ilustres

The Rotonda de los Hombres Ilustres sits in a park beside the cathedral.

Name Change:

In 2000 the name was changed to remove the mention of men (hombres) only as there is now a female buried here - teacher Irene Robledo Garcia became the first female to be honoured.

The monument is now called The Rotonda de los Jaliscienses Ilustres (Rotunda of the Illustrious People of Jalisco).

The Rotonda is a circular monument made of quarried stone, built to honor the memory of distinguished people from Jalisco state.

It was built in 1952, and it contains seventeen columns which mark off a circular space containing ninety-eight urns with the remains of the figures honored here.

Compliments of wikis.

The original plan called for the monument to support a dome but due to funding shortage it was never completed.
