Capelinhos, Faial, The Azores

The Capelinhos Volcano, which errupted in 1957/58 added 1 square mile to the size of Faial. The lighthouse, originally on the coast was half burried in volcanic ash. An interpetation centre has now been built (underground so as not to disturb the landscape), and you can climb up the (restored) lighthouse
