Castillo San Felipe

The fort at San Felipe sits at the entrance to Lake Izabal in Guatemala, at a strategic point that allows access to Rio Dulce and the Caribbean Sea. The fort was built by the Spanish in the early 17th century to keep pirates away from their storehouses on Lago Izabal. As pirate activity died down around 1655 it was converted for use as a prison.
