Usually I am not afraid of dogs. But...
"A Don Kennell steel sculpture has been installed on the corner of Grant and Federal in Santa Fe in 2017. Barn Dog is a monumental piece that features a porch swing mounted beneath the dog’s torso. The sculpture is on loan to the City of Santa Fe. Kennell’s whimsical large-scale sculptures of animals are a community favorite.
“As the ‘City of Art,’ we have to seize every opportunity to make the depth and variety of art available to all in our public spaces,” says Randy Randall, Executive Director or TOURISM Santa Fe.
Kennell uses recycled materials in all his works. By creating monumental sculptures, he hopes to make animals visible and bring particular species visibility. “These sculptures invite the viewer into a fanciful world, where one may swing underneath a grizzly bear, for example,” states Kennell. “The viewer becomes a participant. And can construct a narrative or even construe a relationship with the animal in the sculpture. We hope such experiences will inspire people to reimagine the relationships humans currently have with animals and the natural world.”
