Dome of the Chiesa del Carmine Maggiore
Dome of the Chiesa del Carmine Maggiore, 1627-1693.
The outside of the dome, rich and unique, makes it one of the kind not only in Palermo but throughout Sicily. Four pairs of stone fluted columns stand out with Doric capitals and with large telamons (atlantes) between them: four squat and muscular figures holding the dome.
The convex surface is covered with enameled majolica in colors that remind of the Arab style. It is divided into four sections, and each segment is highlighted with the Carmelite coat of arms. The dome is topped with a small dome, a ball, and a cross.
