Far from home
The fireboat Joseph Medill was commissioned in 1949.
In 1986 Joseph Medill, also known as Engine 37, was reassigned to duty at Calumet after many years on the Chicago River at the foot of the Orleans Street Bridge and later at the Grand Avenue filtration plant. Dring the 1970s it would often give free sightseeing tours to school groups.
The boat is relics of a bygone era, the last of a fleet that protected the bustling waterfront sprawl of Chicago until fire prevention techniques and firefighting equipment eventually caught up and outdated them.
In the early 2000's she has been gutted and now sits in this field overlooking Lake Michigan in Escanaba.
