Five statues of young women stand in the inner peristyle courtyard. They are reproductions of Roman bronze sculptures from the 1st century A. D. found at the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum. The young women wear Greek garments called peploi.
The Getty Villa museum design was inspired by the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum and incorporated additional details from several other ancient sites. It is surrounded by Roman-style gardens.
