West Seattle Tradewell, 1956

    Newer Older

This Tradewell at Morgan Junction (Fauntleroy, Morgan and California) opened in December 1955. The tax assessor's photo dates from March 26, 1956.

Although it included contemporary grocery technology, this was one of the last buildings before Tradewell hired Welton Becket, resulting in the 1956 Crown Hill store and then award-winning Burien store. Read more about the Burien store here, ba-kground.com/50s-futurism-tradewell/

I just might talk about this on May 20 at 2pm at High Point Library as bart of the Southwest Seattle Historical Society series SouthWest Stories. www.loghousemuseum.info/events/southweststories/
This photo appears in my roundup of assessor's photos of Seattle's drive-in markets, ba-kground.com/car-architecture-seattle-photos/

From property file 563750-0005, address 6500 California Ave SW, Washington State Archives Puget Sound Regional Branch.

So then this would have been the old Thriftway, the one that burned in the '90s (and was rebuilt facing California instead of Fauntleroy)?

Thank you so much for posting this! I had lost the image in my mind's eye what the old store looked like!
