An interplay of volcanic colors

A very interesting as well as scenic geological site on Tenerife is "La Tarta" on the "Cumbre Dorsal".

Each one of the layers originated from a different eruption and were deposited over a periode of days or weeks. Centuries or even millenia may have elapsed between the deposition of each layer.

The white layer, made up of pumice fragments, is very light an porous.

The black layers which are composed of basalt, emerged during eruptions with a low gas content.

The reddis layers are also composed of basalt. However, at the time they were formed they were oxidesed by ground water that had filtered into the conduit and posteriorly evaporated.
