You can read more about my $2 Portrait Project here.

Yesterday my friend Torbakhopper and I set out for a Friday afternoon photowalk in the Mission in SF. We shot tons of great stuff, the SF Mission, great street art and graffiti, and lots of people of course. We shot for about 6 hours and towards the end of our shoot we ran into Gary walking down Mission Street near 18th who asked us for money.

I asked Gary if he wanted to do a $2 Portrait and told him about my project and he easily agreed to pose -- he told me he'd even let me pick the background.

Gary is originally from Virginia, he moved to San Francisco in 1977 to attend college at Cal Berkeley. When I remarked that Cal was a pretty good school, Gary told me that it was a lot easier to get in back then.

Gary said he never had kids. He was married twice and one of his wives couldn't have kids. He's not married anymore. He said he did have a dad and a sister though but added that he hadn't seen either in years and didn't even know if his dad was still alive.
