Murris | by Thomas Hawk

Recently I blogged about a new project that I am starting called $2 portraits. The idea is that I will offer $2 to anyone who asks me for money from now on in exchange for their portrait.

Earlier today I ran into Murris. Murris was hanging out at the top of the escalator at Embarcadero BART and asking for money. I had my headphones on but he motioned at me as I approached the escalator to head home. I took my headphones off and told Murris about my project when he asked me for money.

Murris agreed to pose for the portrait. I asked Murris how he was doing today and he told me that he had three problems today. 1. He needed to get home on BART and he didn't have enough money for a ticket. 2. He was hungry (he asked me if I had any food in my backpack) and 3. That he had high blood pressure.

Murris said that he spends time during the day in the City but that he lives over in Oakland and heads back there at the end of the day. He said he was a native and was born in Oakland.

Murris asked me how many portraits I'd taken so far and I told him about 35 or so.

When I finished taking his portrait he told me that he had a great idea. When I asked him what it was he said how about instead of just $2 for one portrait I give you two for $4. I told him that it didn't work that way but thanked him both for his portrait and the idea. He laughed and said thanks back and with that I headed down the escalator to BART to head home to see my wife and kids.
