Photos of West Africa and its People
Photos of West Africa and its People - c.1910-1913
Photos in this set come from two volumes of photographs of West Africa in the Thomas Fisher Manuscript collection. Photographs were taken by H. Hunting of the Paterson Zochonis trading company between approximately 1910 and 1913.

The company began as a trading post in 1879, and began shipping African products to the United Kindom and importing English goods.
The company grew and expanded to Nigeria in 1899, and these photographs are of company employees and their explorations in West Africa.

This project was done in collaboration with the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on the Global Migrations of African Peoples at York University. Vanessa Oliveira and Leidy Alpizar undertook the digitization in consultation with Professor Paul Lovejoy, Director of the Tubman Institute.
Liz Ridolfo at the University of Toronto Fisher Library transcribed the captions, processed the raw images and created the set for uploading to flickr.

All photo captions are transcribed from the album except those in square brackets.
Inside covers read:
[The Property of H. Hunting of Paterson Zochonis, & Co. Lagos, Sierra Leone, Calabar, also Monrovia Conarkry]
