25th anniversary of Chernobyl, Kyiv: Ukraine
This image is part of my ongoing doctoral research into the human impact of the Chernobyl Nucear accident
A Chernobyl widow stands with a portrait of her dead husband, one of the 650 000 liquidators who helped in the post-Chernobyl clean-up operation. On the 25th anniversary of the disaster 3000 people held visual in Kyiv at the intersection of Victory Road and Chernobyl Street.
G&G: It was the stillness of the lone widow with her black and white husband that took my attention here, a woman surrounded by (post)soviet men. The challenge of this photograph was actually seeing the frame possibility in the first place. There were so many people at this event, and it was only when I got down on my knees that this perspective emerged.
