Hilsa, the national fish of Bangladesh, once abounded in the Andharmanik River in the country's south. But threatened by overfishing, pollution and destroyed habitats, stocks declined. To protect hilsa stocks, the government introduced a ban in 2011 on catching juvenile and mother hilsa during the breeding months.
