Remains of a pub, North Harrow

    Newer Older

A beautiful day in early March. Driving by, I saw this oast house roof sticking up out of a building site. Seemed very out of place, as it's a rural buidling in a very built-up suburban area.

I've recently been reminded (see below) that this was once a pub called 'The Oast House' so what you see is a folly and not a real oast house.

Yeah - that place used to be 'The Oast House' pub (formerly The Swan?). Real shame they knocked it down - great pub, nightmare locals - like many in its area!

I'd totally forgotten it was a pub on that site. As soon as you said it, I could see it in my mind's eye. Went in there a few times I think, many years ago in the 80's.

As you say, very much a 'Harrow' pub. Thanks for the reminder - I shall amend the title i think...

it was an actual oast house once upon a time...and its SOUTH harrow.
it'll be flats by now I suppose.

I cannot vouch for whether it was ever a real Oast house or not. When it was The Swan it was a place best avoided. In the 90s it had a makeover and re-opened as "The Oast House", if memory serves. The emphasis was on food and beer and they did both well. Eventually though the old crowd started to return, newly attracted customers declined and it went under again.
