Since October 1992, WFP has been assisting the Government of Malawi with a vulnerable groups nutrition project lasting three years that provides 19,000 tons of food aid at a total WFP cost of US$ 22.9 million. Beneficiaries number 163,000 and are selected children under five year of age, 15,000expectant and nursing mothers, 5,550 children to be rehabilitated and 10,200 single female headed households.
The project aims to improve the food security and nutritional situation of the vulnerable populate by increasing agricultural productivity and providing dietary support. Food is used for distribution to the target beneficiaries as part of a package of primary health services.
