Douglas Miles_Residency_2016
Douglas Miles, Apache artist from the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona came to THE POINT for his second residency in June of 2016. His first in 2009, was a training in skate board stencil design for a group of 20 young students. He inspired them with his fierce identity politics as a Native American and his great artistry. His influence resulted in two youth-led skateboard design collaboratives: Eco-Ryders and Polido Skateboards based on fusing Skateboard Design with Environmental Justice. When he returned in June to make his iconic mural "Fort Apache, The Bronx" which overturned negative stereotypes generated by the film from 1981, we were proud that he referred the THE POINT as his home away from home. His second visit coincided with THE POINT's South Bronx-wide partnership with Partnership for Parks and The Fund for Public Health to build a skate park on the Hunts Point Peninsula. His presence in our work was and is seminal to this initiative.
