Every day, dating back to 1833, this red Time Ball has been raised and dropped to signal 1pm for the Thames River traffic. The ball is raised to half mast at 12:55pm, and then full staff at 12:58pm; it's dropped precisely at 1pm to allow ship captains to set their watches. You can read more here.
