While walking around Esfuerzo on our first day, we noticed a crop of these plants. They are tallish shrubs (5-8 feet?) and the flowers and seedpods resemble bean plants. One person suggested that they might be tamarinds, but the shape of the leaves contradicts this.

On another day, I asked some children what they are, and they told me that they are gandules. Google reveals these to be "pigeon peas," a good source of protein.

I think they're gandules (pigeon peas).
