Up until a fortnight ago, I'd only seen a few Red Kites. Now suddenly they were all over the Thames Valley and M4 corridor. A friend of mine says they've been seen recently over the Test valley.
On our journey up north last Saturday, we'd noticed 4 flying over The Ridgeway on the A34, so after a splendid Dragonfly day at Chartley Moss and a stay-over near Telford, I suggested a long, slow drive back through Wales. If - and only if - we reached there in time without rushing, we could visit the Red Kite center just below Rhayader
As with all plans, our journey took a little longer with distractions - mainly me wanting photos of those mountains I was so familiar with...Anyway, we finally reached the center at 5.15pm - they'd shut at 5.00pm!
We were kindly let free to catch the tail end at no charge, but we'd already had our moment! 45 minutes before - while driving down the A470 (Wales's spectacular north-south spine road), we noticed 4 circling over some fields conveniently above a lay-by.
We pulled over and were soon greeted with a dozen - all following the tractor in an open valley hollow. We only stayed 15 minutes, but were given more we could wish for as this individual hovered above us for a short while.
