I've had a real blast with the Emperors this year, but have missed the unrivalled playfulness of the Southern Hawker
Finally last weekend I had the chance to spend a few moments in the company of this individual as it swooped & hovered around our heads in what can only be described as a large puddle.
Still think the populations of this species are frightenly low compared to last year, and hope that the coming weeks will offer more sightings and opportunities such as this.
There are differing opinions as to what makes an in-flight shot, with some camps preferring there to be motion blur as in this shot. I can see the appeal but personally prefer to freeze the movement of the wings to show the intricate detail.
