From the small cafes to the old hardware store with real wood floors, the Main Street of Pickens (SC) is typical of many small towns in the southern United States. Situated in the piedmont of the Blue Ridge Mountains (part of the greater Appalachian Mountains), the surrounding county is dotted with rolling hills and tranquil rural areas. A short drive north will put the adventurous into the heart of the mountains quickly, where scenic beauty abounds. There are nature preserves, state parks, and waterfalls, as well as unique flora and fauna in the area. To the west is Lake Keowee with fishing and camping opportunities. The ‘big city’ of Greenville is a short drive to the east, and Interstate-85 to the south opens doors to other destinations. Besides the opportunities nearby, one can just soak in the relaxed atmosphere of the town, perhaps over a delicious bowl of ‘Shrimp & Grits’ at one of the local eateries.
