Eewww, it's a tongue
Now I don't actually know what kind of insect this is; in some ways it looks like a bumblebee, but its hair (if that's what you call it) is more spikey than furry. Here, it is netting nectar from the flower, and you can actually see the tongue reaching into the flower as the two front legs hold the petals in place. (You might have to look at the large version -- click "All Sizes" above -- to see it clearly.) I think the yellow speckled bits are just pollen.
Next time, I'll use a smaller aperture (this was f/8) for a little better focus.
