It's hard to believe that this little box could cause so much trouble. On July 13, 1863, this draft wheel was used in New York City less than two weeks after a Union victory at Gettysburg. As the draft process began a major riot broke out; soldiers were brought in from Gettysburg to put an end to the chaos. It would be the last time the draft is utilized in New York City, though it would continue across other states in the Union.
