Lace Butterfly wedding cake
Based on the wonderful Debbie Brown's Lace butterfly cake, with a few twists to make it my own.
This is a 12 inch rich fruitcake, 9 & 6 inch vanilla and raspberry sponge with white chocolate ganache and 3 inch dummy cake top.
Each tier was around 5 inches deep so the finished cake was almost 2 feet tall! - when I was decorating it on the kitchen worktop, once stacked I had to stand on a stool to reach the top!
Debbie's design had the butterflies mounted on a wire frame which wrapped around the cake, try as I might I just couldn't get the darn things to stick, I broke dozens of butterflies trying and by midnight I'd had enough! so chose to stick the butterflies directly onto the cake, not quite the same fab effect that Debbie achieved but I think I got away with it!
The roses were arranged with rose pink and clear Swarovski crystals for added sparkle.
The cake was delivered in pouring rain, already stacked (weighing rather a lot!) to Wollaton Hall . The wedding reception was to be held in the Great Hall, little did I know that the hall would be open to the public until 2pm! - I delivered the cake as arranged, at 11:30am, as I was taking a few photographs when suddenly a rather unruly child burst in and headed straight for the table the cake was on! - I admit, I did actually scream!! ... but it didn't stop him and his mother didn't appear to care!
