hearts and minds [youtube]
this is a screengrab taken from the documentary 'hearts and minds'.
directed by peter davis in 1974, the film focuses on the vietnam war and the devastating effect it had on all participants [and innocent civilians].
this film remains one of the most compelling and powerful war documentaries ever made.
this picture is one of a series of photographs showing political prisoners and victims of torture in south vietnamese jails.
if you have any interest whatsoever in [serious] war documentary, i urge you to watch 'hearts and minds'.
the youtube version is here:
quotes from the documentary:
'they said if we were innocent, they would beat us until we were guilty.
and if we were guilty, they would beat us until we repent.'
nguyen thi sau [political prisoner of the south vietnamese police]
'well the oriental doesn't put the same high price on life as a westerner.
life is plentiful, life is cheap in the orient.
and as the philosophy of the orient expresses it, life is not important.'.
general william westmoreland [american forces commander in vietnam]
interviewer - 'do you think we have learned anything from all this?'
randy floyd [american pilot] - 'i think we are trying not to.'
for me, this is a 'must watch' example of superb documentary film making.
