THE CHURCH OF HOLY TRINITY, LAGOON OF MESOLONGHI, W.GREECE
The Church of Holy Trinity is found within the lagoon on the small island of Kleisova. It was the last line of defense of the Heroic town of Mesolonghi during the Ottoman besiege in 1825. The huge Turkish ships could not enter the lagoon and the small boats would meet hostile fire.
Lord Byron, who paid for the refitting of the Greek fleet and refunded part of the ragged revolutionary army after arriving in Greece in 1823, died of pneumonia fighting Ottoman rule on April 19, 1824, in the Holy town of Mesolonghi in western Greece.
The lagoon of Mesolonghi is a significant wintering place for large populations of birds, as well as a vital stop-over for many others during the migration period. It is an ideal nesting place for rare aquatic birds and feeding place for several predatory species.
