When I am particularly sad or lonely - when the thoughts and feelings in my head seem huge, fast and blinding - I go for a walk and try to concentrate on what's around me, outside me: for example, I might stop to look closely at a railing. Then I'll say, out loud but only to myself, "green paint peeling from a rusty rail" and run my fingers along it and peel off some more of the paint so that I know what it feels like.

London, 2012.
