The Miracle Tree in Brisbane (Moringa oleifera)
Moringa oleifera - Miracle Tree Drumstick or Horseradish Tree
The only genus in the family Moringaceae.
Possibly one of the most useful trees in the world!
The slender, semi -deciduous, perennial tree, to about 10 m tall with drooping branches.
The Horseradish tree originated in India and has spread in popularity to many parts of Asia, Central and South America, Africa and the Pacific.
It is an exceptionally nutritious vegetable tree with a variety of uses - as food and remedies.
-the long green pods are edible when cooked, compared to asparagus.
-the edible leaves make a highly nutritious vegetable - can be cooked and used like spinach.
-the soft yellow and white flowers are an excellent vegetable too! - nice when added to your omlette.
-the roots are used as a substitute for horseradish.
-multiple medicinal use -a remedy for amazingly wide variety of diseases, sicknesses and illnesses.
Well, but you have to decide: if you eat flower - you are not getting pods! if you eat roots - you are not getting anything else!
Grows in subtropical and tropical climates, but prefer dry sandy soil; high drought resistance; flowering and fruiting freely and continuously.
However, It is very uncommon in Brisbane (in Australia?), - I do not know why.
I was lucky to found this small tree in a front yard garden, suburban Brisbane. I should come back for seeds.
