Male flowers of Hura crepitans, the sandbox tree

Hura crepitans, the sandbox tree, also known as possumwood and jabillo,- among the largest trees of tropical America.

This unusual monoecious species has the female flower reduced to a naked pistil with a reddish peltate stigma. A cone-like cluster of reddish male flowers are shown on the photo.

The fruit is also exceptional as it has many carpels that separate explosively into 1-seeded segments.

Однодомный - Monoecious species - Male and female flowers are separate, but borne on the same plant = with separate male and female flowers on the same plant.

Family: Euphorbiaceae
