Nature's Camouflage

    Newer Older

A butterfly blends in with the leaves at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens on March 16, 2011. Large Size

The butterfly is a Goatweed Leafwing (Anaea andria). I did see it in flight briefly and the upperside of wings were mostly orange. I had never seen this species in the DFW area before; or perhaps I saw it at a distance and always assumed it was a Comma or Question Mark.

Wonderful shot, Ken - it's well camouflaged there against the leaf litter

Very nice shot of the leafwing here, they are super hard to get close to very skittish butterflies

Very cool! I've never seen one. I got a brown lifer recently - brown on brown (dirt) too but terrible shots. It's an elfin. I'm trying to figure out if it's Henry's (most common here) or what.
