This was the moment 40,000 people from across the region had gathered to see. At approximately 4:00 p.m. local time, locomotives No. 999 and No. 1001 collided with one another at a combined speed of 120 miles per hour. Seconds later, the eruption of both engines’ boilers propelled hot shrapnel into thecrowds, killing three and wounding even more.
