Fire Angel

    Newer Older

Taken for Active Assignment Weekly: See the Light.

Angel of fire, light and shadow.

This one is much better on black, with lower brightness.

What it Took: Took all the photos off the wall. Set up the wings in front of the wall on a stool with a light aimed at them. Stood in front with candle, carefully positioned so I covered the setup.

Also, hours of thinking and experimentation before I settled on this setup. I'll spare you the details, but this wasn't my first thought. Or my second. Or my third.

Post-processing: cropped square, removed a bunch of spots on the wall and a tiny piece of setup that I could see behind me, shifted the temperature of the photo a bit more into the red. The vignette is natural, from the light aimed on the wings.

ninja gecko, JasonWalton, Helle V, and 37 other people added this photo to their favorites.

It looks like BestofWeek12 is by photorebel2008. That person needs to add a comment with the same voting number. Sorry, just doing my AAW admin job.

OK let me just add another one: "BestofWeek16" for not only fulfilling the assignment but doing it with style and getting something out that really pleases the eye.
Certainly worth all your trial and error efforts.

Wow. I'm overwhelmed by the number of people who voted for this. Thanks everyone!

And as a more concrete thanks, here's a view of the setup, so you can see more clearly what was making those shadow wings. The photo is heavily annotated, so if you want more details, just click through!

      Partial setup for "Fire Angel"

Now I've gotta come up with a good assignment idea... hmmm...

You are quite welcome to say no of course but i saw this image a few weeks ago while trying to think of a final peice for my GCSE art course and it gave me the idea to make some wings and draw my self as an angel blah blah blah but anyway i was wondering as this is the image that resulted in my final peice being created whether you would mind if i put in my coursework folder to show how i got to my final piece? Let me know, i wouldnt want to use it without your permission. (: x

@katydoherty please feel free to use it as explanation in your coursework folder. I'm glad you found the image inspiring!

Just thought I would let you know that Texas Tongs has just come within a couple of votes of tying your "BestofWeek" vote record. We need you to resume submitting so we can give these Southerners some competition.

*laugh* I'm a lot more south than I used to be, though, so I'm not sure if I'll technically be much help! But I am overdue to get back to regular photography as an excuse to get away from unpacking. ;) Thanks for the kick in the pants!
