Then and Now: South Van Ness at Army Street, 1953

Photo from the Cushman Collection at Indiana University.

South Van Ness at Army Street, San Francisco

What's most remarkable is that this scene still looks very much the same, even today.

Most notable to me — apart from the fact that gas used to cost 25 cents a gallon but now goes for $4.17 — is the Golden Gate Cleaners, visible at center left. The shop is now Vietnamese-owned, but its still there, with the same neon signage. Amazing.
