Minnesota State Capitol
Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul, MN (1905). It was designed by prominent local architect Cass Gilbert and was modeled after Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. Its unsupported marble dome is the second-largest such dome in the world after the basilica. The first capitol was destroyed in a 1881 fire. The second capitol was completed in 1883, but was quickly made obsolete by the rapid growth of the Twin Cities.
