Air Force Facility Missile Site 8 (571-7) Military Reservation
Air Force Facility Missile Site 8 (571-7) Military Reservation in Green Valley, AZ, a national landmark (1963). It is the only remaining Titan II ICBM Site of the 54 built during the Cold War. The Titan II was the largest of the ICBM, built during the "missile gap" of the late 1950s and early 1960s. These missiles had storable liquid propellants, allowing for incredibly rapid deployment; following key-turn, they could launch in less than a minute. They could burst in air or on ground in about 35 minutes up to 6000 miles away. They were also greatly sheltered, capable of being launched from its silo rather than having to be lifted to the surface. That way, it could still launch even if an opposing missile strike hit nearby. All other Titan II sites were dismantled from 1982 to 1987, and the missiles were used to launch satellites. This missile has been deactivated.
