Grande Isle, a barrier island below New Orleans, suffered from Hurricane Gustav. With the oncoming Hurricane Ike, New Orleans District Commander COL Alvin Lee issued emergency orders to increase the level of protection for the island. In a short period a temporary "burrito levee" was in place for the Hurricane. Following the hurricane, the Corps set out to employ a permanent solution for the islands risk reduction. Combining the resources of the New Orleans and St. Louis, the Corps is installing a technologically advance solution of geotubes to create an artificial dune that will impede the impacts of storm surge on the island.
