Mosquito Alley: Nutria Salad

A young Nutria getting some greens. They're a large rodent (bigger than a muskrat, closer to an otter) that has invaded the wetlands in NC. They're quite fearless and did not run unless I made sudden moves.

I went for a walk at 5:30 in the morning on the "Charles Kuralt Trail" at the Pea Island Nature Reserve. What I failed to appreciate is the mosquitoes.

Now, I cannot describe the density when I was somewhere the wind was blocked. They literally GRAYED OUT MY VISION they were so dense and their hum so loud you could actually feel it.

I was slathered with 25% DEET but they still got me. My wife counted 62 bites on me before it got old counting them. I have a lot more. It's not many considering the THOUSANDS that swarmed around me.

Still, I got some shots I wouldn't have otherwise.

Please visit the Entropic Remnants website or my Entropic Remnants blog -- thanks.
