The End of an Era: The Open Hearth

At one time (50+ years ago) this bay was hot and busy. It used to house a line of reverbertory open hearth furnaces that were huge. Now it houses raw materials and spare parts -- which have been allowed to run low as we wind down. The old furnaces were dismanteled as electric arc melting took the place of the dirty, coke fueled open hearth furnaces.

I will begin posting random pics -- new and old -- of the place where I used to work. Well, I'll still be there a couple of more weeks.

The steel mill is closing down. I worked there for 22 years.

Later this year I'll have a blog post about this steel mill -- which had nearly a 100 year run.

I'll likely be okay as I have marketable skills -- but it's going to be a hard row to hoe for the hourly rank and file. Their skills are steel specific in many cases and there aren't many mills left anymore. Pray for them.
