Gainsborough Old Hall

The Old Hall is emblematic of Gainsborough, in Lincolnshire, my Home Town. So much, that for many years it was used as a device on the signs that marked the Town as one arrived. (Sadly and inexplicably those signs were removed in early 2010).

The Old Hall is a Grade 1 listed Fifteenth Century manor house, and stands in the centre of the Town. Now fully restored, and in the care of English Heritage, things have not always looked so rosy for the Hall. Indeed, at the start of the 1950s the place had become quite dilapidated and run-down, and there were plans afoot to demolish it to make way for a car park. Fortunately, and in no small measure due to the efforts of a local historian, Harold Brace, the Hall was saved for us to enjoy today. What a pretty picture it makes, enough to make any Gainsborough-born person swell with pride!
